Online Scams – Case Study

Over the last few years, we have noticed there has been a very large increase in online scams with scammers manipulating the subject into giving them money and gifting them various items.

Our role as a Private Detective in Newcastle is to gather as much information about the perpetrator to provide our findings to the client. In the last month alone, we have had multiple scam cases. We have worked on one particular case where a client had sent an individual over 1.5 million pounds of his life savings after a full investigation. We have discovered the true identity of the individual, and our client has now passed our findings to the police, who are now dealing with this matter.

When speaking to any person online, ensure you have all of their information and you have physically seen the individual on FaceTime or webcam to ensure the person you are speaking to online is, in fact, the same person they are portraying to be.

Scammers will often build a relationship online over weeks, sometimes even months, to pull their “targets” in and eventually will ask for money for things such as medical bills/legal fees, which will be requested to be transferred via wire transfer or cryptocurrency. Hence, there is no trace of where the money is going.
